Clematis hexapetala, also known as six‑petal clematis, is a plant in the family Ranunculaceae, native to Siberia, Mongolia, northeastern China, Korea, and Japan. The etymology of the genus name Clematis traces back to the Ancient Greek klematis, which denoted a vine, a twining branch, or a shoot. This term derives from klema (“broken-off twig” or “shoot”). The entire genus contains essential oils and compounds that are extremely irritating to the skin and mucous membranes. The dried roots and rhizomes of Clematis hexapetala are officially recognized in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia under the name Wei Ling Xian. Traditionally, they are used in herbal medicine to relieve pain and reduce inflammation.
